Read about the photograph of the "Migrant Mother" that is shown above. Then answer the questions that follow.

The photograph was taken by Dorothea Lange, who worked for the Farm Security Administration (FSA). This administration was part of F.D.R.'s New Deal and gave work to photographers who recorded the impact of the Depression on farming families, small towns, and resettlement camps. The most poignant and vivid pictures were those of the migrant workers who had been driven from their farms by bad times.

The most famous photograph was the Migrant Mother that is considered a powerful example of photojournalism and a symbol of the grim conditions faced by many Americans during the Depression.

Life During the Great Depression

What was life like for the ordinary person during the Great Depression? How did people survive without work or with a low paying job? Read the excerpt from "A Nickel's Worth of Skim Milk: A Boy's View of the Great Depression." It is memoir of Robert J. Hastings' life growing up during the depression in Illinois. Hastings wrote the book as an adult many years after the depression ended. He became a Baptist minister and writer when he grew up. Nickel
